Who can register vessels in Malta?

Vessel registration in Malta is available to EU citizens residing on the island, allowing them to register under the Maltese flag. Maltese corporate entities can also register ships under the national flag. EU citizens and corporate entities outside Malta can register vessels by appointing a resident agent. Additionally, non-EU citizens who own businesses in Malta can register vessels under their company name.

For yacht registration, Transport Malta is the governing authority, overseeing two categories of yachts:

Pleasure Yacht Registration in Malta

Pleasure yachts are designed primarily for recreational use, providing enjoyment and leisure activities for their owners and passengers.

Commercial Yacht Registration in Malta

Malta registers commercial yachts that are at least 15 meters in length and operated by either the owner or a corporate entity for commercial purposes. These yachts, intended for commercial use, do not transport cargo and accommodate a maximum of 12 passengers.

Vessel Registration

The Maltese Register is the sixth-largest maritime register in the world and the largest within the European Union. We comply with EU Directives and International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Conventions, registering various vessel types under the Maltese flag. Non-EU/EEA residents and owners can even register ships that are still under construction.

Registering your vessel in Malta offers advantages beyond its esteemed reputation, including substantial fiscal benefits and high-quality local services.

VAT Leasing Structures

VAT leasing structures apply reduced rates for leasing yachts and superyachts used for pleasure. The calculation is based on the effective use of the vessel in EU waters, exempting the lessee from VAT charges in non-EU and international waters. Additional VAT benefits are available for short-term charters of pleasure yachts, provided specific conditions are met. The yacht must be available for use in Malta, in accordance with the rules governing the place of supply.
